I believe that a good design needs no explanation. There is no confusion where the eye should go because the most important information is the most prominently placed, eye-catching feature on the page.
My personal preference is towards minimalistic designs though ultimately the websites I create are for my clients, not me. I am strictly a graphic designer and the visual aspects of design are what I am passionate about.
